Yesterday officially launched summer here at Wake Forest Presbyterian Church, as we enjoyed the first of “Ten Summer Sundays,” an initiative designed to shake up our “normal” routine for a couple of months.
We started with an inter-generational education hour that turned out to be a lot of fun and a great success. There was a devotional, a short explanation of some of our “green” church initiatives, and a lesson on stewardship. Then we broke out to the craft tables and made butterflies. Because, well, that’s how we roll here at WFPC!
The project involved recycled materials, lots of glue, the application of our limited dexterity, and even more paint. The finished product will be placed in our always-in-creative-progress church garden.

What a joy to have Andrew and Alicia here with us at church! And what better way to celebrate the freedom we enjoy than a sanctuary full of people overflowing with gratitude and with love.
Rebekah and I were talking about this, and we believe that fireworks are fine, patriotic parades are fun, and “all-American” cookouts are well and good…. BUT, the most appropriate way to celebrate the Fourth of July has to be the worship of God.

Freedom is fundamental to Christianity, and acknowledging the relationship of this freedom we enjoy to faith in God is critical if we are going to live our freedom to the full.
Rebekah’s message on freedom this Sunday – “The Power of Freedom” – was one of her best – challenging and compelling in every sense. You can pick up the sermon around the 28:00 minute mark on this video. Take the time to listen, and you will be very glad that you did.
Sharing communion, along with my parents, and Andrew, and Alicia, put the seal on a really good kick-off to summer here in Wake Forest. There is so much that is powerful about being part of a vibrant faith community… but for me it’s taking the bread and the wine, in the company of people we love, that brings it all together in a demonstration of love that is more eloquent than words.
