With school about to get started for David and Beks (Kindergarten and Pre-school) it was time for a quick two-day visit for grandparent immersion. Monday that meant storytelling with grandmama, water-fights with grandmama, and cereal-box eclipse-viewing with grandmama.
You can tell, I’m guessing, that the common theme here is grandmama. We Skype, or Facetime, and it’s always “Hi grandaddy…. where’s grandmama?”
Sigh. But it’s okay, really, I understand the appeal. Rebekah is a walking taking fun-factory and the grandkids can’t get enough. And it’s all genuine; she doesn’t have to do anything other than be herself.
She did get some help from the Internet when it came time to make the cereal-box eclipse-viewing device. And, to be honest, the experience was much better than the result. I’m not sure that it helped us see much of anything at all. But that’s not what they’ll remember; they’ll remember researching it, making it with grandmama, then standing out in the driveway watching a crooked shadow that may or may not have had anything to do with the eclipse!
Water fights are fun, too, but what really captures our grandkids’ attention is the story Rebekah is telling. It’s an epic, make it up as she goes along, saga, that I believe has all the makings of a children’s book series. Rebekah has developed several memorable characters, and their ongoing adventures are captivating.
Today is our daughter Naomi’s birthday; the family will all be here this evening for her celebration before taking the kids back to Virginia. Enjoy the photos, they are a story all by themselves.
