rethinking the “One in Christ” scripture…

Acknowledge Jesus or not, follow Christ or have nothing to do with religion... regardless, Jesus has made it possible for us to be one.

Good morning, friends. Today I’m posting short and early… then I have to run. Rebekah and I are here in Atlanta for a seminar and things get going well before I typically finish my first cup of coffee.

What I have on my mind, though, is important. It’s been working on my spirit and my consciousness ever since I heard the news that there had been another mass shooting, this time targeting people for no other reason than because they are Jews.

The Bible is Always Working on Me!

So this is the scripture that has been – and is – working on me. I may be taking some liberties with it, but I believe my theology is probably quite sound. First, here’s the verse:

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. – Galatians 3:28

Now here’s my paraphrase. “Stop discriminating, limiting, judging, and isolating people according to the way you like to sort them – Jews, Blacks, Anglo-Saxons, Muslims, Immigrants, Men, Women, LGBTQ…XYZ, Republicans, Democrats… etcetera. Labels and stereotypes always get in the way of God’s plan for real community. Here’s the bottom line, people: you are all one because of Christ.”

Traditionally I have always thought of this verse as indicating that – once we are all Christians together – none of the things that traditionally separate would matter anymore. Being fellow Christians irons out everything else.

That may well be true.

But today I’m reading “because of Jesus, we are all one.” Not just in Christ, but because of Christ. That would be me and my Islamic neighbor. You and your atheist co-worker. The communist and the fundamentalist Christian. One, because of Christ.

Acknowledge Jesus or not, follow Christ or have nothing to do with religion… regardless, Jesus has made it possible for us to be one.

It’s potentially a radical idea. But it’s one that has certainly got me thinking.
