my parents, Wake Forest in the spring, and green pastures that restore the soul…

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
    he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths… – Psalm 23

This time of the year I could easily post day after day of photographs documenting the bright loveliness of springtime around Wake Forest. And I will – but at the same time I am trying to include the context of story and day-to-day life.

Today I am struck by the juxtaposition of the new and the old. Over the weekend my pictures featured our grandchildren, today it is my parents. Both against the backdrop of early April in North Carolina.

Providence:

1-IMG_3923If you don’t already know the story here’s a short summary. When Rebekah and I moved to Wake Forest my parents decided to join us in the Raleigh area. A quick assessment of their needs made me realize even living a mile or so apart could be a challenge. So I did what anyone would do and knocked on our neighbor’s door.

“Good afternoon,” I said. “I have three questions for you.”

“Shoot,” he replied.

  1. “First, do you still hate your commute into Raleigh?” “Yes,” he said. “Today was awful. Why?”
  2. “Glad to hear it,” I said. “Next, do you have a downstairs master bedroom? (very unusual in our neighborhood).” “Yes, we do,” he said, still scratching his head at my response to his commuting pain.
  3. “Then question three: Can we buy your house for my parents?”

That’s how my parents came to be next door neighbors.

Parks and Recreation:

1-IMG_3908We live in a lovely neighborhood and Tyler Run is especially beautiful in the springtime. It’s easy to walk, the trees are in full bloom, and we have a park just across the street. But yesterday we ventured just a mile to the north and spent the afternoon in Joyner Park.

It was a spectacular day and I was really pleased dad was able to get out and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.

So here are a few photographs of my favorite of Wake Forest’s many city parks and recreation areas.

Thinking about it, I don’t think it was an accident that the church first invited us to visit Wake Forest in early April (2013). What a beautiful place!

Peace and more peace this Holy Week – DEREK
