Today’s post is a simple question. I mentioned the other day that my publisher asked for a new “Author Photo” to use in their soon-to-be-revamped website. My question is “casual or serious?”
I kind of like the new portrait, but Rebekah believes no-one wants to read books by some “stodgy-looking old guy.”
So here are a couple of samples. What do you think?
My publisher has the last word, but you – at least I sure hope so – are the book-buying public.
I promise some actual writing later today or tomorrow! Peace – DEREK
Prefer the Mr. Casual. We quite agree with Rebekah!

We like Mr. Casual. Leads to interesting readings. Ray and Jane
I don’t recognize the stodgy guy. Your energy and light show with Mr. Casual.
You look to serious in the one. The dog makes you look good. Just be happy he can’t write. Just kidding.
I rather an author look more like the rest of us than an author. I agree with Rebekah.
Love the photo with you and your beloved pup. I would definitely buy a book written by him – he gets it! Agree with Rebekah for sure.
The second picture is better.
I think I prefer casual generally. But I also think it depends on your subject matter for this book. You would want the tenor of the picture to be congruent with the picture (I think).
You and Scout definitely!
The one with you and Scout. For sure!
I like the casual. However, if the publisher wants the jacket and bookcase, then add your great smile!
Definitely the picture with Scout. You need to be smiling in the first picture. You are a warm, caring person and that picture isn’t you.
the casual one. closer to people, real, fun, human (any more?)
Mr Casual for certain!
Thanks, all of you, plus the dozens who commented on Facebook. The score is pretty much unanimous for the more casual look. You will be happy to know that my publisher agrees!
