Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. – Genesis 2:8-9
While I was drinking coffee and reading my scripture, upwards of 30 Wake Forest Presbyterians made their way to our community garden, where they had a great time together harvesting sweet potatoes and the last of the tomatoes.
By the time I arrived the party was already in full swing. I really don’t believe there is a better devotional to share than these images of children, youth, and adults of all ages working together to feed Wake Forest residents experiencing food insecurity.
God did an amazing job planting this garden in the northeast corner of our church property, and such a phenomenal increase has been granted, yield upon yield that has far outstripped the expectations of those who faithfully till the soil.
This is the gospel, this is the good news. That we have enough, and that when we remember how we have been created to live in community as God’s children, then there is plenty for everyone.

Our church – WFPC – has several initiatives in hunger ministry area. We send weekend backpacks of food home with at-risk kids at three area schools (for their families)… we support “Tri-Area Food Ministry” food-banks with volunteers and $$ (big fundraising banquet/auction this Friday at church)… one ministry team goes into downtown Raleigh to help feed people on the street… MTM (Mission to Military) prepares food packets for area veterans in crisis… then the community garden supplies local food banks with fresh produce as we harvest (also open for people to come in and pick their own) – last few months yielded 1,500 pounds sweet potatoes and also 1,500 pounds of tomatoes – one ministry-team of around a dozen people is dedicated to maintaining the garden – winter vegetables now getting started. Then we have a couple of international hunger efforts too, but it is the local that really captures the imagination.
