Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. – 1 Corinthians 3

So this is a grandchild weekend. Actually, we have the whole family, but my paparazzi instincts have been focused on the children.

Rebekah is a wonderful “game-playing” grandmamma. Now they’re first and second grade she has been teaching them the finer details of card games such as “Go-Fish!” Organizing, counting, holding the cards in suites, strategy, etc.

It is gratifying to watch the children learn and grow and mature and then be motivated to learn and grow some more. They soon tire of repeating simple games and projects that are rote and easy. Creative endeavors such as building and art and Legos begin to reflect higher-order thinking, and games such as Candyland give way to cards, and Monopoly, and Pictionary.

So why, as people of faith, do we get stuck playing the spiritual equivalent of Candyland when we could be moving on to more creative applications?

I’ll leave it at that, for now. Too much to do with the grandchildren.
