unearthing a hidden treasure

IMG_E7185So this was a little bit exciting. I have been doing some “deep dive” work in my parents’ home this week and came across this old pencil sketch from 1982.

It’s the ancient parish church in the quaint village of Isleham in Cambridgeshire, England. Back when I was young I used to enjoy the meticulous process of drawing, but it has been decades since I put pencil to paper and I had almost forgotten.

I wish I had found this a couple of years ago because I could have used it in my WW2 novel, Suddenly the Light Was Gone. The key scene in the title chapter plays out inside this old church.

As a teenager I spent more than one summer in the village, working on the farm for uncle Sid. It’s a beautiful location in the low-lying “Fens” of East Anglia, a classic English picture-postcard scene with church, post-office, pub and village green in the middle and farms all around the perimeter.

One day I’d like to go back, this time with Nikon instead of sketch pad, and do a photo-essay highlighting life all around Isleham.

The novel traces much of it’s content from my adventures there as a teen. Here’s the link if you’re interested in a light – but interesting – read (click here for Suddenly the Light Was Gone).

Peace and more peace – DEREK

  1. Wait – you drew that, Derek? Brother, the Lord has bestowed more than just the gift of words to you, no doubt. As member of the body who is completely void of artistic capabilities, I totally respect and admire such skills in others. Recognizing that the camera is your chosen method of capturing the world around you, I would suggest that mixing and mingling a bit of that “other” form might be worth the effort. 😉 Peace and Love to you, always!

  2. Let me know if you need a “valet” on you trip to England.
