Exotic cars and classy marriages

“Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new.” – Ursula K. Le Guin, The Lathe of Heaven

IMG_0511Okay, disclaimer. I am not a gearhead. I may love my car, and I do like to go zoom-zoom, but I know nothing when it comes to mechanics. I don’t even change my own oil.

That said, I got all excited Saturday evening when Rebekah and I attended a reception at the Carolina Exotic Car Club. Oh. My. Goodness. What a classy idea for a venue!

The occasion was the 50th Anniversary celebration for Jim and Sue Crawford. They did a lovely vow renewal – with immediate family – in the church Rose Garden, then hosted a dinner reception at the car club.

So, off the top of my head here’s some of what surrounded us: BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari, Porsche, Rolls Royce, McLaren, Ford, Pontiac, Alpha Romeo, Triumph, Lancia… I know there were more.

IMG_0519My choice to take home would have been the 1950’s era Mercedes convertible; not because it was necessarily worth the most but because of style. Bottom line, that’s what the evening was about – style. At least that’s what our friends Jim and Sue showed in their celebration.

It’s what a great marriage communicates to the world: class and style, wrapped up in good people who bear witness to light and faithful love.

So enjoy the photographs, but look around and pay attention to the great relationships around us, telling the good story of commitment, and of trust, and of becoming – well – a classic. Not a museum piece, but a testimony to class and style.

Congratulations, Sue and Jim – DEREK
