The number “One Million”, data, statistics, “reach”, and real people

The whole wide earth is full with your faithful love, God, teach me your ways!

Numbers are both intimidating and curious – especially if you are a language-arts person like me who gets uncomfortable around much beyond 3rd-grade math.

But, increasingly, numbers – primarily zeros and ones – are becoming integral to the way we communicate with one another, and how we measure engagement when we are not physically in the same space.

– 2019 in the CLC

Here’s an example. Church attendance used to be fairly simple to measure (depending on the skill and/or motivation of the ushers!). At our church, pre-pandemic, on average anywhere between 350 and 500 people showed up for worship on a given Sunday. Today we have to look at the number of “views” on both Facebook and YouTube. Currently, “views” are landing around 500-600. But how many people does that represent? Is a family of four watching each screen? Or does a family of three, four, or five view maybe two or three screens? Does 500 views represent 500-600 people, or closer to 1,000 or 1,500?

Closing in on 1,000,000!

– something like this…

Here at Derekmaul.blog I am on the cusp of a significant milestone. This WordPress site is fast approaching One Million views!

I may not be much of a “numbers guy,” but for someone who is passionate about reaching people with the Good News of Christ’s grace, light, love, peace, mercy, and encouragement, the fact that my perspective on life has been hooked into 1,000,000 times is all kinds of exciting!

This could be YOU!

So let me put this out there. Ready? It is possible that sometime during September of 2020 you will be the one millionth to sign in to Derekmaul.blog and read that day’s post. If it is you (and I’m not sure at this moment exactly how I will identify who it is…), then I plan to feature your photograph and a few words about who you are and what makes you tick (yes, we will have to exchange a couple of emails). Plus I will also send you one of the 8 books I have published (your choice).

Like I said, this could very well happen during the month of September. It will certainly happen in the next six weeks.

So keep logging on. And, if you are willing, I’d really appreciate it if a few more of you would share this link via email or on social media.

Because this “numbers” thing is all about getting The Good News out there to as many people as possible. And who knows, not only are you “one in a million”, you may well be THE one in a million.

Peace and love, always – DEREK

    • Thanks for the boost, Earl. I will fine-tune how I work this out and post about it when “the day” becomes clear. I hope it turns out to be you.
      Peace – Derek

  2. Oh how fun. Congrats! Not sure why I haven’t thought to share your wonderful posts in the past…they have been such a blessing. I will have to remember to do this from now on. Also, I’m right along with you on the numbers thing. I myself prefer language arts. Well, here is to one million more…lol.
