So having shared my pain situation with you yesterday, here is the latest update.
My family dentist took one look and sent me over to a specialist (endodontist). But the endodontist cannot proceed with the root canal until the infection and swelling are first relieved, so he started me on a new antibiotic and a steroid. Both dentists said they have their hands tied when it comes to writing prescriptions for pain treatment (So I’d like to say “thanks a lot!” to those who have so abused pain-pills, because now people who really need them are often shut out).
The lowest moment of this whole experience came when the endodontist performed a “cold” test to pinpoint the source of the pain. “Please be careful,” I said. “This tooth has been unreasonably cold sensitive for several weeks. I am liable to go through the ceiling.”
“I guess you did warn me!” he said after my inner “Hulk” emerged for what felt like a very long two seconds before leaving me curled up in a ball sobbing, a pitiful blubbering wreck who needed a lot of Kleenex.
So I am hoping and praying the pain goes away soon. It is exhausting.

This leads me to the image I am counting on helping me through today, as I do have a lot of work to complete.
I really do enjoy my study. Yes, it gets out of control messy much of the time but that’s only because it’s not a museum, I do use it.
I love the sensation of being surrounded by books, of having my guitars nearby and accessible, of seeing the trees through the windows, of sitting in my easy chair when I need to pause and reflect, or read, or take a phone call.
This study has a real soul, palpable, and I believe you could know something about me just by sitting in the leather chair and letting the books, the photographs, the memorabilia, the instruments, the messy desk – and more – all soak in.
Next time I tidy up I’ll set up an annotated photo tour, and I’ll share a few details: like the steamer trunk my grandfather travelled with in the 1930’s that passed on to my dad for some of his travels, and now serves as a side-table. Or the “Golden Apple” from when I was recognized for some cutting edge work as a teacher. Or my old English school cap.
So that’s where I am this morning. Still in pain but hopeful. Getting some work done and grateful for this space – and that I can.

I’m sorry you are in pain. I’ve been in your situation & there is no escape. Hope the meds work & you are pain free soon. LOL
The endodondist will do the root canal & probably send you back to your regular dentist to have the hole filled. Talk about specialization!

I went through the same thing 2 years ago. A temporary crown, and then a final crown. Two weeks later I had severe pain from the crown. Had to go to Wake Forest Endodontics. They discovered that the tooth involved had 3 roots, not just 2. They cleaned out the 3 roots, but in the process of cleaning the 3rd thin root, their drill tip broke in the root. They thought it would be ok, but 2 weeks later I was still having pain from an infection in the tooth roots. Ultimately they had to extract the roots. Needless to say I have a lot of sympathy for your situation and can’t stand going to the dentist.

I’m grateful there are dentists when we need them; I just don’t want to need them very often.
I had a root canal on my upper front tooth that had a crown. So the dentist has to drill in from the back of the tooth so the ‘hole’ wouldn’t show. I still don’t know how he did it but drilling into the crown was not fun. I pray most of us can avoid things like that & just see the dentist for cleanings!!!
