“The Evidence of Things Not Seen”

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?” – Matthew 6:28-30

Our son, Andrew, said yesterday that my traditional “5-photo-Friday” has turned into what he called a “Friday Photo Dump”!

I would argue that – while my posts certainly do tend to go beyond five photos – it’s not so much a “dump” as “an abundance of wonderful images it would be a shame not to share.”

Today is no exception. I took to the back garden with my Nikon DSLR and asked the flowers to sit for a few portraits. These are the best of those images. I could cut it down to one for each color, but I don’t want you to miss the spectacular variety of photographs.

GOD?

Some of you will argue that – while nature absolutely produces some stunningly beautiful specimens – there is nothing in the natural world to justify the leap to belief in God.

That point of view reminds me of the discussion I had Wednesday evening with the men’s ministry group. We talked a lot about the evidence on exhibit in our own lives as “Followers of the Way of Jesus.”

Before we ever open our mouths to promote Christianity, we agreed, it would be helpful if we ourselves lived and loved in such a manner that some resemblance to Jesus shone through; at least enough to make an impact….

A good look around our garden, through the lens of my camera, tells me a lot about the creativity, the sense of whimsy, the imagination, the care, the artistry, the belief in the future, and the joy of The Creator.

It’s a truth that quite literally washes over us and – for me at least – sometimes sweeps me away.

– the author and Max, April 22

Obviously I cannot demonstrate this via proofs, but the truth of it speaks directly into my soul with a depth and resonance that seems, in a way, to echo what the psalmist describes as “deep calling to deep.”

Deep calls to deep
    in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
    have swept over me.

Psalm 42:7

So enjoy these photographs. Things I found in my garden; “the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). – DEREK
