Golden evening light and early morning mist

The Tar River, downstream, Thursday morning May 2

Thursday sunrise a thin mist rolled down the river, disappearing into the morning as I approached. It was like an invitation to begin the day slowly, carefully, prayerfully and in sync with the Creator.

All of today’s “Photo Friday” images come from the same 15 hour period. It was all about the light – from Wednesday early evening through Thursday morning. First the golden afternoon, then the brilliant evening, and finally the unexpected mist on my morning walk.

Wednesday, having enjoyed an exceptional cover-dish supper followed by a comprehensive and encouraging report from the mission study team, I took Max out for a short walk; the light around the church was magnificent.

So I tried to get a couple of atypical angles on the view of our sanctuary. Plus of course the classic image (in the gallery, below) that was just too clear and lovely to pass up.

Thursday morning the mist hung low and heavy when Max and I left the house at 6:45. We immediately made our way to the Main Street bridge so I could look back up – and down – the river to see if the light was good.

We’ve been here a little over five months now and I have never seen the water levels this low in the Tar. It’s also the first time I have seen the light glow with such a subtle golden sheen, or the mist hang in delicate suspension like that, or the leaves shine almost with their own light.

I guess I need to keep my eyes open wide so that I don’t miss a thing.

I want to see everything that I can over this year. It is the work of the Spirit – I know this; it is the hand of God; it is the work of love.

Peace and love – DEREK

  1. I thought the railroad bridge was upstream from the bridge at rhe roundabout. The river flows east down to Greenville and little Washington so the view without the bridge is downstream isn’t it?

    • It’s the curves! At that point the Tar is actually flowing west. The river is flowing from the bridge where I’m standing west toward the railroad bridge. Then it runs south towards Greenville then east to Little Washington and the Pamlico

      • Great photos! I really like the morning mist. Adds a lot to the photo.
