This Sunday marks the 30th anniversary of Rebekah’s ordination into the Ministry of Word and Sacrament; three decades as a “Teaching Elder” in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
I am, of course, immensely proud of my amazing wife. And so, this morning (sunday September 23), I took the unprecedented step of walking myself to the pulpit, leaning into the microphone, and interrupting the preacher as she was going through some of the pre-worship announcements.
This is the exact text of what I said: (two pictures from this morning by Dane Zane. Thanks to Dan and to Julie Hellman for sending me images.)
ood morning! Please excuse my unauthorized interruption. But I’ve decided to “occupy” this pulpit… (and I haven’t even been pre-approved for a legal “minute for mission”).
However, for the first time in the 16 years we’ve been here, I’m invoking “privilege.” Deal with it, Rebekah!
- Seriously, though, I’m jumping in this morning because today marks the 30th anniversary of Rebekah’s ordination as a minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church. I wanted to make sure you all don’t miss the occasion.
30 Years! I have just three things to say about that:
-
Rebekah’s sense of calling from God, her enthusiasm, her vitality, her love of people, and her passion for ministry have only grown over three decades. If you don’t get around much in the church beyond First Presbyterian of Brandon then – believe me – you have no idea how unique and special that is!
- I, personally, have enjoyed every minute of this amazing adventure. I honestly can’t wait to see what the next decade or so brings!
- One of Rebekah’s favorite Sundays is Rally Day, when she gets to place the Word of God directly in the hands of our 2nd graders. But she’s been doing that for all of us on a regular basis, faithfully, often many times every week, for 30 years of ordained ministry. So today I want to – symbolically – return the favor and place this commemorative copy of God’s Word in Rebekah’s hands (it’s a travel Bible, or an “on the go,” edition; because this – constantly – is a journey that we’re on together).
I love you, Rebekah, and I’m so proud to be married to such a positive and beautiful witness to the truth of the power of the Gospel of light and life.
And so, to what I said in church today, all I can add is, “Amen!” – DEREK
Congratulations to Rebekah and you! You are both amazing people. Dave and Sue
Congratulations to you both, and here’s hoping the next 30 years are even better!

Congratulations to you, Rebekah! And to you, Derek, as I am all too aware of how necessary spouses are to a vibrant ministry!

Congratulations, Rebekah! What an accomplishment to celebrate and rejoice in. And Derek, I think I would like to say congratulations to you as well. It’s the partnership of your lives together, supporting each other and working out your love and commitment to each other that augments those years of Rebekah’s service and your years of support and all the contributions you have made to the world over these years. Lots to celebrate all around! Here’s to more years doing well what you both love!
Thanks, Janice! It’s all good.
Dear Derek and Rebekah,
Blessings to a wonderful couple who model the best of what Jesus would have us do in ministry to yourselves and others. You inspire me every day. Love in Christ, Henry
What a blessing you both are to so many as you allow The Lord to work in and through you.
Thanks, Bill!
Good to “hear” your voice.
