Today I’d like to share a simple story about a dog who came clean.
Oh, Scout Labradoodle has had baths before, but this time her loving dad decide to go with the “self-service” option at the local Dirty Dogs Spa. It’s a lot cheaper than letting the experts do it and – who knew – the adventure turned out to be a lot of fun.
First, everything is so much easier is when you have access to the right equipment:
- The walk in tub;
- the rubber non-slip dog mat;
- the mulit-position water-hose hooked up to a dial featuring combinations of different shampoos, conditioners, or just plain rinse;
- the bucket full with every conceivable variation of brush, comb, scissor, washcloth, and more;
- the long dryer hose with variable speeds and interchangeable heads;
- and, the pièce de résistance, the dandy rubber apron designed to protect dad from too much collateral wetness. Oh. My. Goodness.

Good grief. I felt like a guest must have felt walking in to master-cabinet-maker Norm Abram’s PBS New Yankee Workshop. I always used to laugh when Norm would finish making some masterpiece of complex carpentry, look into the camera, and say something like, “Yes, it’s that easy; and you can do it at home.” Well yes, but only if you have the same $250,000 piece of specialized equipment!
SLIDE-SHOW: So I’ll take you from “scruffy” dog to pristine pup in a quick slide show.
If you’re in the Wake Forest area, I’d recommend the wash-the-dog-yourself option. Dirts Dog’s Spa owner, Vanessa, is very helpful, and I wasn’t kidding when I said the place is state-of-the-art.
Yes, I’d do it again in a heart-beat (and very soon, too, because Scout is already dirty again!).
And, as you can tell from these photographs, Scout Labradoodle is most certainly one astounding piece of art.
Woof! – DEREK
