“God has made everything beautiful in its own time…”

What do people really get for all their hard work? I have seen the burden God has placed on us all. Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end. – Ecclesiastes 3:9-11

IMG_E9411I don’t want to come across as a “single issue” blogger, but this time of the year here in North Carolina keeps hitting the theme, and with such compelling beauty, that it’s pretty much impossible to ignore.

What I’m talking about is the undeniable persistence of springtime, the relentless tenacity of regeneration, and the beautiful fact of new life.

So Thursday afternoon Rebekah and I invested a few hours in the garden, making fresh piles of yard debris by the road, raking, bagging pinecones, mowing, digging, weeding, planting new flowering shrubs, and moving some too.

Our backs hurt, our hands smell like dirt, we have fresh abrasions, and our hearts are lighter.

IMG_E9412Because there is something about playing in the dirt that calls to truth on a much deeper level than that presented in the devastating array of statistics that is the daily news. Not that we should be uninformed, or live without caution, but that we should – we must – rest our sense of peace, and assurance, and meaning, and purpose in the knowledge that “God has set eternity in our hearts..” and that “he has made everything beautiful in its own time…”

Peace, and I mean that in every way. – DEREK
