learning a new “song and dance” routine

Rebekah is home again after her long trek to Miami and back. Now that all the drama, and joy, and sadness, and rest, and travel of August is behind us maybe we can begin to catch a glimpse of what our new routines are going to look like.

It’s a lot like a new piece of music; you tune the instrument, learn the notes, begin to assemble the chords, try to match the words to the musical phrasings, listen to it being played by somebody else, tinker around with the structure until you find your rhythm, then adapt it to your own style and interpretation. And that is just for a solo piece – Rebekah and I have to work out how to play this new song together!

For me especially, there is a lot that has not changed. I am still writing for three different editors, as well as picking up the occasional freelance or consulting gig; I am still taking care of my parents, next door; I am still working on a couple of book-length projects.

Rebekah’s new life, then, has to slot in with mine. So I guess it’s more than a new song we’re playing, we’re going to have to learn how to dance too.

But this is more than a challenge, it is a beautiful opportunity. All through our life together (more than 42 years now), we have interfaced with the raw materials of amazing possibility. More often than not, we manage to gather our resources and – together with the help of God – create something beyond the limits of our biggest dreams.

Rebekah preached on this amazing truth at the beginning of August (I will paste in the complete scripture below): God – through Jesus – is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us… (Ephesians 3:20). God – one translations paraphrases the idea – will constantly energize us.
