All of you are children of light and children of the day. We don’t belong to night or darkness. So then, let’s not sleep like the others, but let’s stay awake and stay sober. People who sleep sleep at night, and people who get drunk get drunk at night. Since we belong to the day, let’s stay sober, wearing faithfulness and love as a piece of armor that protects our body and the hope of salvation as a helmet. – 1 Thessalonians 5:5-8
This morning, in a hurry and having a hard time coming up with something to share, my “memories” directed me to a post from five years ago, “We Belong to the Day!” The occasion was the celebration of Wake Forest Presbyterian Church’s 25th anniversary.
It was a great post, loaded with photographs that are well worth checking out again. But it is the scripture that really grabbed my attention.
Paul’s words (from the earliest extant document in the era) were written long before anything else in the New Testament, including the Gospels.
Today then, all I want to do is to leave you with this wonderful idea: Since we belong to the day, let’s stay sober, wearing faithfulness and love as a piece of armor that protects our body, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
- We belong to the day!
- Wear faithfulness and love as armor.
Click on this link (photos from WFPC’s 25th) if you want light-saturated photos from the 25th anniversary. But alternatively we can live as children of light today. Faithfulness and love is what marks the presence of Jesus in our lives! What an opportunity to live the message of promise!
