The Promise of the Ages – even (maybe especially) in the ER!!

– my dad heading to WakeMed North

“This promise is for you, your children, and for all who are far away—as many as the Lord our God invites.”

Acts 2:39

Well, it is the 4th Sunday in Advent, and the words I have chosen for this week are “Joy” and “Promise.” It’s honestly a bit of a stretch when I just spent Saturday evening in the Emergency Room with my dad!

But here it is. It’s Advent regardless of what the world looks like at this particular moment, or from my particular perspective.

The JOY of Advent is the coming of Jesus, the breaking into time and space of the possibility of reconciliation and relationship with God. Jesus is The Creator’s ongoing invitation, and that truth transcends what may or may not be happening on a Saturday evening in Wake Forest.

And the PROMISE is what Peter describes as something that is wrapped up in God’s invitation. This is the promise of the ages, good news for humankind without any reservations.

Christmas, Advent, the gift of the child born in a manger – the reality of God’s reaching in to be with us and for us through Jesus – is fully present in the back of an ambulance, in the discomfort of hours in the ER, in the challenges of life that sometimes come at us relentlessly.

Joy and Promise, everyone. This is the fourth week of Advent! – DEREK

  1. Prayers for your father, your mother, and you and Rebekah. It’s hard to deal with the issues of extreme old age. May God bless all of you as you navigate this time of life. Margaret
