Exploring the Urban Landscape through Photography: Pittsburgh

– Rebekah, Tim, Titus, Vivi

Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord,
    but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Make your ways known to me, Lord;
    teach me your paths.

Proverbs 1:7, Psalm 25:4
– Pittsburgh, PA

For those of you who appreciate the photography aspect of this blog, today’s post offers an unusual but interesting series of shots.

It was the day our friend Tim Black gave us a tour of the city and I found the urban landscape particularly interesting.

– The Cathedral of Learning

Pittsburgh has a compact skyline featuring a wide variety of architectural style. Some of the older buildings came as a result of the economic boom surrounding Gilded Age personalities such as Carnegie and Mellon. Then there are many newer structures that show the ambition and the prosperity of the modern era.

Personally, I enjoy Pittsburgh’s hybrid look. Of particular note is “The Cathedral of Learning”, a 42-story skyscraper that serves as the centerpiece of the University of Pittsburgh’s main campus. Removed from the center of the city, it towers over every building in the vicinity, as if to say “education is the highest value to which we can aspire!”

This series of photographs will conclude with a few more from the “Mt. Washington” viewpoint.

My prayer is that these “travelogue” posts will inspire not only exploration, and adventure, but also a commitment to learn more about this great land, and to – symbolically at least – invest ourselves in a cathedral of learning of the mind, and of the spirit.

Because we all have so much to learn as we continue to grow – DEREK
