Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
Now that Rebekah and I are a little more free to travel, one of our intentions is to take things more slowly and deliberately – when possible that is.
So Friday, heading from Jacksonville to Orlando, we stopped in DeLand for lunch and had a brief look at Stetson, the wonderful university where we first met almost 47 years ago.
Of course we picked a day when the searing heat just about melted us, but that is pretty much standard for Florida in the summertime, and we did enjoy seeing how well both the university and the town are doing.
Downtown DeLand is obviously thriving (we recommend the “Half Wall” restaurant) and the campus is as captivatingly beautiful as ever.
College Education:
It has made me think about how incredibly valuable a great college education is. I was not a good student in high school, and a university degree was nowhere on my radar when I turned 18. But then so many unexpected twists and turns in my life conspired, and there I was at Stetson, reinventing myself and learning to use God’s gift of my mind.

Higher education is an amazing opportunity and a critically important resource; Rebekah and I will always be grateful for what we learned – and how we were taught to learn – at Stetson University.
If ever there is a time when this country needs to remember the biblical mandate to value wisdom and to respect learning, that time is now.
These campaigns against academic freedom are hugely concerning. Education is not the enemy; it is ignorance (especially the willful kind) that is such a dangerous threat.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.

I loved going to the Stetson Pastors School before COVID shut it down. A beautiful school in a wonderful town.
