Cruise notes and pictures: “The Sea and the Sky”

You stand next to the sea and you are in touch with all of your longings and all of your losses.

Elizabeth Hay

One thing about sailing is, no matter where the ships take you or how many the ports of call there are, in between you are going to see a lot of water and endless skies.

This series of photographs puts the focus on the spectacular beauty of the oceans and the panoramic swarths of sky that are new and different and amazingly inventive every hour of every day.

The only story I have to go with these photographs is that of the two of us – me and Rebekah – sitting on our veranda, or leaning over the stern, or walking the upper decks, several times each and every day. We would immerse ourselves in the sea and the sky, let it wash all over us, saturated in beauty and awe and grateful peace.

The place where the sea meets the sky is a kind of glimpse into the edges of eternity. It is the endless creative interactive play of light and water. Life and more life.

Then God said, “Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth.” And that is what happened. God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens. God called the space “sky.”

And evening passed and morning came, marking the second day.

Genesis 1:6-8

Every day, love and light and boundless beauty – DEREK

  1. I’ve been enjoying your beautiful cruise pictures. What kind of bird is that? I’ve seen them on cruises before, flying beside the ship, but never knew what they were.
