“Every artist has a central story to tell, and the difficulty, the impossible task, is trying to present that story in pictures.”
Gregory Crewdson
Today I am excited to try out my new toy; same camera, new lens. I know what you are thinking: camera guys are never satisfied, and all you want is the next gadget…. But not really. I have learned over the years that changing out a lens during a shoot is next to impossible. On occasion I have even resorted to carrying two cameras – one with a telephoto and the other not. Believe me, that is not ideal.
So Thursday, after keeping this lens (above and right) in my Amazon cart for more than two years, I finally pulled the trigger.
Of course it helps that the price dropped to around 40% of original asking. Anyway, I am now the happy owner of a Tamron 18-400mm (F/3.5-6.3 DI-II VC HLD All-In-One Zoom For Nikon APS-C Digital SLR Cameras).
That’s right, this baby is wider than the standard 35mm at one end and double my old 200mm telephoto at the other.
I did a couple of quick test shots right out of the box, and I have to say I am feeling good about the possibilities. Check out the example below, looking west to our church (slide to compare), focusing on the bell tower. Then, in the gallery at the end, looking east to the cross atop the steeple at Calvary Episcopal.

I am planning a more complete test run at church this morning. Rumor has it a whole cast of local characters from around 1874 may be stopping by – in period costume – to tell some of their story to the congregation. I have been asked to photograph what happens.
I know for sure we will get to meet the legendary “Three Annas,” the women whose enthusiasm first organized a Presbyterian Church here in Tarboro 150 years ago. Plus I think maybe Judge Howard and possibly one very well-preserved preacher.
So stay tuned for a report on what transpires. Or, better yet, come on down to Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church for worship and see for yourself.
This is a very exciting time for the congregation in Tarboro. Rebekah and I are happy to be spectators, and thrilled to be able to take it all in.
Peace, love, and blessings – DEREK

Enjoy boasting about your new lens, Derek. Under President Biden and the Democrats, most of us are struggling with grocery prices.
That’s a strange and off-topic comment, “Jane”!
Regardless, have a blessed week.
An excellent lens for your camera and a great choice, for the right reasons. That lens will capture an eagle in its nest and yet open up enough to catch a wide landscape. Tamron makes good lenses.
You bet. I’m very excited!!
Derek,
Thank you for sharing your gift of relating Scripture to daily life and photography! Such a great combination to glorify God! Keep up the great work!
Thank you,
Aaron
Thanks, Aaron. Such a privilege and a joy!
