“City lights are like stars on the ground.” – Unknown
Krakow is a singularly beautiful city; Krakow at night is stunning. Medieval, vibrant, alive, accessible, walkable, soaked in interesting history, echoing with stories, full with beautiful churches – resonant with possibility.
Then at night – and night comes pretty early in late December – shining with so many lights. From the Christmas markets to Saint Mary’s basilica to the old clock tower to the cloth hall to the riverfront and the bridges to the scores of restaurants and pubs and coffee houses that spill over into the square. Lampposts, Christmas trees, festive lights, shopfronts, floodlights illuminating the classic medieval architecture.
I think Krakow may be my new favorite town. I know, I said this after we stayed in Assisi, then again in Florence, previously in places like Portland Maine, another time after a couple of weeks in Dresden, even in the quaint town of Cowes on the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England.
But I have to say, after three weeks it’s a little hard to think about leaving. The cultural experiences, the great restaurants, the lovely parks, the museums, the universities, the theaters, the concert halls – and most of all being with our “Intentionally International” family of Andrew, Alicia and Mr. T..
Simply put, this place shines, and today I want to focus on how it shines at night.
Yes, I agree: “City lights (really are) are like stars on the ground.”
