“All things are possible to the one who believes.” – Mark 9:23
Every once in a while I like to post something Rebekah has shared with our church family. Her weekly “Dear Fine People” letters are always uplifting and encouraging, and this week her focus is on “what’s next” for us as her 18-month contract with HMPC draws to a close.
Enjoy, and stayed tuned to see what really does happen next – we would all love to know! – DEREK
Rebekah’s Letter:
Dear Fine People,
I’ve been giving a good bit of thought to the Easter season this year… that period of time between the Resurrection of Jesus and the experience of the Holy Spirit swooping in and carrying us on into our future. There’s another observance known as the Ascension of the Lord (40 days after Easter Sunday), which marks the end of Jesus’ bodily presence in the world, when he told the disciples to go to Jerusalem and wait, just before he was “…lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.”
It just so happens that this is the season Derek and I are “waiting” for what’s next. We’re still settling into the 408 St. Patrick Street house, the old, new Maul Hall. Derek will keep writing and serving through HMPC where he has committed to serve as a member. I’ll be a free-agent preacher, doing some pulpit supply work in area churches… if needed. I still plan to join the choir. I’m like most of you as we “wait” for whoever the new pastor will be. God knows, but we simply need to keep waiting patiently. Once that person arrives, I’ll have a clearer idea of how I can be of assistance… if needed. We love Tarboro, and we have always believed that the best gift we can give any place we live, is to love it.
So, I guess we’ll simply have to keep loving you, and our church, and our community and each other. In sorting through the ‘stuff’ we have smushed into 408, I came across an old Calvin and Hobbes comic strip (by: Bill Watterson) that I saved and laminated, and had it on my office door for many years. I had noted that it was the last published strip, dated December 31, 1995. It speaks to how Derek and I are viewing the possibilities of our future.
Calvin and Hobbs are trekking through the snow, hauling a sled, looking for the perfect hill in which to sled down:
- Calvin says, “Wow, it really snowed last night! Isn’t it wonderful?”
- Hobbes says, “Everything familiar has disappeared! The world looks brand new!
- “A New Year… a fresh clean start!” Calvin responds.
- “It’s like having a big white sheet of paper to draw on!” says Hobbes.
- “A day full of possibilities!” adds Calvin. “It’s a magical world Hobbes, ol’ buddy…”
The last frame has the two of them taking off down the hill. Calvin’s last words are:
- “… Let’s go exploring!”
It’s a good motto for the next chapter… a chapter full of possibilities. We mustn’t forget Mark 9:23: “All things are possible to the one who believes.” [One of my favorites… for sure in the top five]
Together in Christ’s love,
Rebekah
