Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged;
parents are the pride of their children. – Proverbs 17:6
What can you do when it hits 96-degrees and there is no mall, no indoor activity space, no possibility of adequately cooling a restored 1870’s home and there is a five-year-old in the house?
The answer is to go out early to walk the dog and to move as slowly as possible… and then only when necessary.
So Mr. T. and I headed out around 6:30 – about the only time of the day the temperature was manageable. We just happened to pass by a tree-felling operation in progress that literally shook the ground (see video below). Our grandson was super-excited but I was sad about seeing one of the town’s ancient behemoths go down. I understand that it was likely a safety issue but that does not stop me from grieving the end of such a massive specimen.
Later we all walked into Tarboro’s center for a little shopping – Rusty’s for peanut brittle, the sale at “Berry & Bud” and then ice cream for T. at the coffee shop.
In the afternoon T. showed us his kindergarten portfolio (“Grade Zero” as they say in Poland) including some really cool art work. He graciously gifted us with one piece then said, “But you can’t have my ocean or my prize-winning book cover – they are my favorites.”
But I did take photos. Art must run in the family because the kid has a real eye for color.
All in all, the kind of good day that the heat could not beat. Grandparenting is the best.
And, again, we are so very blessed – DEREK
