Unfolding God’s Word

The unfolding of your words gives light…

Psalm 119:130
– Psalm 119:130

The Bible is a remarkable book. Or, rather, collection of books. I have experienced and described scripture in many ways over the years, but my best understanding is that of a narrative spiritual history, culminating in the gift of Jesus and then the story of how Christian faith emerged in response to his life, death, resurrection and ongoing invitation for all of us to live as disciples.

Rebekah and I read the Bible every day and it is a window into the heart of God, a consistent source of wisdom, guidance and inspiration. We have spent most of August in the Psalms and – this past week – we are working our way through the longest, Psalm 119.

Psalm 119 is a little “meta” in that it is a commentary on the Psalmists’s own relationship to scripture. It is also full with familiar gems, such as “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (verse 105, KJV) and, “You are my hiding place and my shield, I hope in your word” (verse 114, NRSV).

So this morning I want to share one of yesterday’s verses with you all, especially as we prepare to attend worship today: “The unfolding of your words gives light…”

– Rebekah and Derek Maul

I have this image of God sharing something precious with me, holding it out, then literally unfolding light and truth.

Be faithful in worship, and be faithful as a student of God’s good word. And, peace from both us us, wherever you worship today – DEREK
