In Need of a Workshop!

“Your home should be a story of who you are, and be a collection of what you love.” – Nate Berkus (Interior Designer)

– current condition….

This photograph (above) is one of those images that is calling for a story. And, thankfully, there is one to go with it.

Many many years ago, when Rebekah was just a toddler, her dad – Robert Alexander – used to bring home junk furniture he would find. Her mother was particularly fond of odd chairs and Bob loved the process of cleaning up and shoring up and restoring and refinishing.

More often than not, however, the demands of time and other distractions got in the way, and “distressed” chairs would often sit on the porch and collect dust sometimes for years on end.

Building on tradition:

– removing the paint

This is likely why, in the fine tradition of great ideas collecting dust, last year Rebekah found a couple of old chairs in need of love and attention while, simultaneously – I was doing my best to give away as many things as possible because we simply don’t have enough room in our new house!

At the same time I love the idea of Rebekah hooking in with her passion for restoration in this way.

These particular chairs came from our friend Debbie (she lives in the gorgeous rambling home on the southwest corner of Saint David and Church). Rebekah’s plan is to remove all the paint, refinish the wood, and replace the broken caning in the seat.

– one of many new tool-sets

This is another one of those instances when I wish we had a garage, or at least a place we could dedicate as Rebekah’s workshop.

But for now we have a front porch, a couple of small projects, Rebekah’s uncontainable ambition and overlowing imagination, and a boatload of new tools!

Stay tuned. I guarantee this will only get more interesting! – DEREK
