Tabula Rasa – a new thing – a Temple of Grace

“Forget the former things;
    do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
    Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
    and streams in the wasteland.” – Isaiah 43:18-19

If you have been reading this blog at all over the past few months you know that Rebekah and I have been on the road back and forth to Orlando quite a bit.

This photograph is pretty much where things stand at this moment. Or, better put, it is where our daughter Naomi is standing. And you can see that she is standing in what is, essentially, a tabula rasa – a blank slate.

Tabula rasa is a Latin term with the following definition:

“A blank slate or clean slate, an empty surface ready for writing or new impressions.”

Possibilities!

Change like this is not easy – but it has all the potential to be good, beautiful and full with promise. Why? Because a blank slate offers the opportunity to live into the future we choose, to write any kind of a new story, and to paint something we maybe never before imagined.

When you have a blank slate, a clean slate, then not only is reinvention on the table, so is establishing new pathways, new patterns, new approaches. In short, anything is possible.

For my part, I believe that “Fabulous,” and “Rock Star at work,” and “Super-positive Mom,” and “Best Dog-parent Ever” are all very much in play. Not to forget “Great at my Job,” “Child of God” and “Kick-butt Artist.”

David, Beks and Geoffrey are going to be so proud of their mom. It may look like an empty apartment today, but moving forward I believe it is going to become a Temple of Grace.

“See,” God says, “I am doing a new thing…” DEREK
