“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, ‘Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.’” – Lewis Carroll
I think it’s fair to say that while this past weekend’s snow represented the “chamber of commerce” side of winter, slush is absolutely the cold, wet, inhospitable underbelly of the season.
Today is Wednesday and our exciting snow event is quite literally turning into slush. So let’s enjoy a few additional photos from Saturday night when the snowfall was still fresh and beautiful – when it was dark and everything was in the process of being covered with this new blanket of white fluffy joy.
The following series of shots spans the first couple of hours, the initial layer covering our neighbors, the back view and then the beginnings of accumulation out on Saint Patrick Street.
As it got dark I ventured out onto the road to enjoy the beautiful quiet and the exaggerated stillness that always accompanies the first snowfall.
It’s as if all of creation is pausing in wonder to honor the masterpiece of design and the elegant simplicity of the beauty that covers the earth.
I have mentioned before how a blanket of snow seems to erase all the imperfections and the litter and the decay and the neglect. It’s as if we are being reminded – just a hint – of what is possible if we live with more respect for the great gift that is this community.
Make no mistake, Tarboro is a precious gift – a treasure that has been placed in our trust. This place is worth our care, our attention… and our purposeful intention too.
Grateful – DEREK
