but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint. – Isaiah 40:31
I don’t know, maybe it’s because I had this big birthday a couple of days ago, or maybe it’s the allure of springtime and the promise of new life. Whatever the reason, I pushed my comfort zone, got on a bicycle, elevated my heart rate, and rode 10.3 K with a group raising money for local outreach.
The money – and we more than met our goal – goes to Tarboro Community Outreach, a local non-profit our church was instrumental in setting up. Established in 1987, TCO provides essential resources including shelter, food, and clothing to those facing homelessness or food insecurity.
It was a cold clear morning, with temperatures hovering around 42 and a light breeze. My friend Steve Brittain encouraged me to ride the 10K instead of hike the 5K and sweetened the deal by bringing along an extra bike.
“How long has it been?” someone asked me. “You think you’re going to remember how?”
“Probably a good thirty years,” I responded. “But I think it’ll come back to me… they say it’s like riding a bike…!”
So A) I am very pleased that I made it all the way around. B) I can’t believe how hard it was! And C) I am disappointed at my lack of physical strength!
Right off, I found it challenging to swing my right leg over the saddle to mount the thing! Then, and I’m talking within the first 200 yards, my thigh muscles started to burn and protest.
The first mile or two was slightly (but noticeably) uphill and into a steady breeze. I kid you not, I was very close to throwing up and I almost quit. But Steve lagged behind with me as the peloton disappeared into the distance. His encouragement made all the difference.
Yes, my performance was pitiful, but I was moving consistently enough that my watch pinged me after fifteen minutes and asked if I wanted to record my “Outdoor Cycle workout.” You bet I’ll take credit for that!
By the time we arrived back at the church the temps had climbed to a balmy 44 and the 5K joggers were beginning to cruise in too.
Steve, who is a serious cyclist and is trying to entice me into joining the cult, told me to “Hang onto it for a few days and ride it around. See what you think….”
“What I think” right now is that my rear-end hurts.
Peace, and good community vibes – DEREK

GOOD FOR YOU RIDING A BICYCLE AGAIN! Thanks for sharing it is not easy to get back on but you made it.
Haha! Not sure if I am going to get one and make it part of my exercise routine….
Keep the bike for a while and go riding everyday. You will get into better shape and love it. Get Rebekah out as well.
