Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
let the sea resound, and all that is in it.
Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;
let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.
Let all creation rejoice before the Lord… – Psalm 96
The past few days here in Tarboro have been truly spectacular. Early mornings in the 60’s, afternoon highs in the mid-80’s, clear air and beautiful sunshine.
Everything is green, too, growing like crazy after all the rain that fell when we were off on vacation.
In consequence it has been hard to walk anywhere – or ride my bike – without constantly framing the world around me for the next photograph – at least in my mind. Homes on Main Street, flowers in gardens, and the landscape of the farms when I ride between here and Speed and beyond.
So Thursday, walking across the Town Common then up Main for my hair appointment, a couple of my favorite historic houses were presenting like magazine covers, somebody’s black-eyed Susans looked inviting, and the row of Southern Magnolia lining the sidewalk just north of the library was begging for a photograph.
Then, Friday morning, six of the Tarboro Cycling crew came cruising down Saint Patrick Street and onboarded me for a twenty-five mile country ride.
Pedaling into the rising sun, lush fields of productive farmland on every side, temperatures in the low-mid seventies, clear air, quiet roads and the company of good people.
I can’t help but wonder at how blessed I am to live here and at this particular moment in history, where I can enjoy these unique freedoms – retired to such a great community, enjoying our beautiful home and still healthy enough I can ride into the countryside and embrace a morning like this.
It is so easy to read the news and listen to the politicians and see this world through the eyes of disappointment and outrage and righteous indignation… and I understand where all of that is coming from… but I am overwhelmed right now with gratitude for the goodness and the opportunity and the plenty.
Grateful, in so many ways – DEREK

What a refreshing and deeply encouraging reflection, uncle Derek. Thank you for reminding us that God’s greatest gifts are often found in the ordinary moments we are tempted to overlook. Your photographs beautifully capture the quiet glory of creation, while your words gently lead the reader to pause, notice, and give thanks. Psalm 96 fits this meditation perfectly—creation itself rejoices before the Lord, and your images invite us to join that chorus of praise. I especially appreciated your contrast between the constant noise of the news and the peaceful perspective that comes from looking at the world through gratitude instead of frustration. That is a timely reminder in today’s culture. Health, meaningful friendships, the freedom to ride through the countryside, beautiful landscapes, and the simple privilege of living another day are all blessings that can easily be taken for granted until we intentionally acknowledge God’s goodness. Your reflection encourages us to slow down, open our eyes, and recognize that every sunrise, every tree, every field, and every quiet road speaks of the Creator’s faithfulness. Thank you for sharing not only beautiful photographs but also a heart that sees God’s grace in everyday life. May the Lord continue to bless you with health, joy, wisdom, and many more opportunities to inspire others to live with grateful hearts and eyes that recognize His goodness in every season. Blessings!
