For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. – Colossians 1:16
I love the gentle rhythms of everyday life. Twenty-four hours each day, seven days in a week. Each month its own unique place in the calendar of observances, flowers blooming, seasonal temperatures, rainfall and more. Moving through the rare beauty of winter, spring, summer and autumn.
So, in keeping with the cadence, I have a photograph for each day this past week:
- Monday: the magnificent tree in Riverfront Park.
- Tuesday: the massive crepe myrtle on top of the bluffs not far from the Quigless building.
- Wednesday: the sidewalk on Church Street.
- Thursday: the entrance to River Road.
- Friday: the live oaks in Calvary Churchyard.
- Saturday: Tarboro’s Town Common.
- Sunday: Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church.
The beauty of the church is also an invitation. Because these are not just marks on the calendar, they are sacred rhythms. Much as the Earth and the planets move in relation to our solar-system, the galaxies and the march of time-space, these days and seasons are ordered and sustained by divine decree.
No, maybe not so much decreed as by appointment – divine appointment. Like our invitation to rest and to worship on the Sabbath.
God has not arbitrarily required worship of us so much as invited us into the divine rest. Sabbath is part of the pattern, the tempo of our creation and it simply makes sense to pause, to re-nourish, to replenish ourselves in the presence of the Holy and the sense of home that is community.
Because it is not only creation as completed – or past-tense – but Creator God sustaining us in our present and future tense.
We were not made and then set loose to eventually run down, but invited into a sustaining relationship, a rhythm, with God… through Jesus who stands as the Father’s invitation home.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise God all creatures here below
Praise God above ye heavenly hosts
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
The invitation stands – DEREK
