cool photographs – and thoughts about the Presbyterian witness…

So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. – 1 Thessalonians 5:11

1-DSC_0487As a matter of preference, I’d rather be known as a wordsmith. As a matter of practicality, however, a lot of people click on this site to see my photographs. It’s okay: because either way I have this opportunity to share some good news and to encourage readers along the road as you all – as we all – do y/our best to live as beings of light in a sometimes dark world.

To that end I’m sharing a second set of photos from last weekend’s meeting of the Presbytery of New Hope here in North Carolina (see Saturday’s post for the worship service). These images cover the business portion of the day; I have chosen some for the story they tell, and others because of the more “artsy” quality they represent.

Once again – and this has been a common theme during my tenure as official photographer – the day turned out to be a joyful celebration of God’s good work in and through the numerous congregations who support one another in the ongoing initiative that is the Good News of the Gospel of Love.

1-DSC_0418If you want to see all 170 pictures you’ll have to go to the Presbytery of New Hope website, or scroll through the gallery on their Facebook page. But I will share a representative few here.

One real challenge was to photograph a full day of events all in the exact same physical space, yet keep the pictures fresh and interesting. Consequently, I danced around all over the sanctuary, up into the balcony and down again, crouching low to change the angle, lifting the camera high above my head for another perspective – all while trying to be unobtrusive and out of the way.

So enjoy some of the results. But view these photographs through the lens of understanding what it is like for the church to go about its business in the context of a deep faith in God, personal trust in Jesus, reliance on the Holy Spirit, convictions that move us, passionate love for the Gospel, understanding one another’s differences, authenticity, and mutual respect.

1-DSC_0538I think I’ll highlight that list:

  • deep faith in God,
  • personal trust in Jesus,
  • reliance on the Holy Spirit,
  • convictions that move us,
  • passionate love for the Gospel,
  • understanding one another’s differences,
  • authenticity,
  • mutual respect.

This is how we should be. United when it comes to pointing the way to Jesus, but diverse in terms of so many of the details, all wrapped up in Monday’s important idea:

“Every last one of us can be wrong to some degree when it comes to the fine details of practicing faith. So we need – constantly – to live in a posture of humility and of reform.”

Enjoy the images, and pray – continually – for the work of The Church.

In love, and because of love – DEREK
