The only possible word to summarize Wednesday’s mountain experiences with the grandchildren is “spectacular.” It helps, of course, that this is all new to the kids. They were already beyond impressed by the time we had driven just a couple of miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It just got better from there.

Eventually, after a beautiful drive, we made it to the parking area below Clingmans Dome. The altitude brought cool temperatures and welcome relief from the summer heat. Most impressive, however, was the fact that Rebekah made it all the way to the top! She was determined, and she put one foot in front of the other until she was there.

Taking the children up to the observation deck was a real treat. David was busy making short videos for his YouTube channel, Beks simply looked at the views in wonder, and I did my paparazzi thing.

Most of my photography was with my Nikon DSLR, but I didn’t bring the right cord along so all those images are going to have to wait for our return to Wake Forest next week. But I do have enough on my phone for a brief blog, including this short video.

After Clingmans Dome we drove over to Dry Falls. Again, the children were blown away. The sheer volume of water, the beauty of the site, and the fact that they were able to go behind the falls and stay (relatively) dry.

The winding roads, the steep climbs, the awesome mountains, the rugged gorges, the expansive views – it was another full day. Here are a few of the images from my phone.
