Welcoming Jesus – the Road to Emmaus

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”

Luke 24:30-32
– April 7 at HMPC

It has been a few weeks since I shared something directly from Rebekah (y’all seem to like it when I do this!), and this past Sunday’s short communion meditation provides a great opportunity to do so.

I missed the sermon “live” because I was in Wake Forest, having a great experience with our old church. But Monday I listened to Rebekah on YouTube and found it to be an especially powerful message.

She talked about The Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35) and how our encounters with Jesus sometimes surprise us and always call us into a deeper relationship with God.

You can either go to the Rebekah’s Message Youtube link (around the 32-min mark) – or you can watch this twelve-minute “bootlegged” video I took with my phone.

I pick up the action toward the end of the scripture, where Jesus breaks the bread and the two disciples suddenly realize the identity of their guest.

Enjoy – and be inspired to welcome, and listen to, Jesus.

I believe we all have the opportunity to host Jesus in our conversations, in our homes, at a meal, when we break bread together.

Sometimes, rather than wait to be invited, the Master shows up anyway!
