This week’s “Photo Friday” features history, beauty, streetscape and food

– across from our house

Photo Friday this week looks like a fairly random set of images but they all have some story to go with them.

I will start with the one of Rebekah because it actually pulls together several recent themes.

First, the continuing story of our year-long 150th celebration at Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church. The church spire Rebekah is standing with may be grounded now, but it started life as one of four adorning the tower of our original 1874 sanctuary.

The metal spire was rediscovered and recovered more than 100 years later in a salvage yard, then reinvented as a feature on the HMPC church grounds when the cemetery was restored a decade ago. But not just a feature, the spire also stands as a memorial to my friend Chauncey’s (see yesterday’s post) mother, Peggy Rodgers Leggett, who served this part of the Presbytery as a much loved lay pastor for many years.

Then, this seriously yummy Eggs Benedict photo! This is what happens when I have to fast 12 hours and miss breakfast in preparation for my bloodwork (which was outstanding, by the way!). Rebekah and I then immediately took my hungry self to a restaurant for brunch, having just had my cholesterol checked!

Some may say I overcompensated….

Finally, a handful of photographs taken around the vicinity of our church, representing the beauty of the historic district this time of the year.

The first two images (one looking up St. Patrick Street, then one looking down St. James right across from our home) capture some of the amazing crepe myrtle trees outside and around our church, then the third features some of the streetscape walking up St. Patrick, running north toward the Town Common.

I shared enough serious writing yesterday to give you all a pass on going too deep for today. So just enjoy the photos, but be sure to be on the lookout for some very interesting/surprising stories coming your way in the next week. – DEREK
