On the Road to West Virginia (Wild & Wonderful)!

How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of those who bring good news,
who proclaim peace,
who bring good tidings. – Isaiah 52:7

The plan for this vacation is to spread out the travel days. So having done the history tour of Greensboro (Battle of Guildford Courthouse and the Woolworth’s sit in), Saturday we drove the scenic route to West Virginia and the New River Gorge.

What a great day.

The scenery was remarkable pretty much the whole drive, stopping in at Danville for lunch, cutting directly through the mountains on small winding roads. Then, heading into West Virginia, the mountains really started to speak and the kids were properly wowed.

This of course is our intention, to expose them to America the Beautiful in every possible way. For us this is a lifelong process, and we hope to have kindled some of the same sense of quest for epic natural beauty in David and Beks.

So, immediately after settling into our hotel room, it was back in the Rav-4 and into the park, hiking to and around the amazing overlook known as Grandview.

And, yes, the children were amazed. “This is something we could never see anywhere else,” David said. Beks agreed: “It was a breathtaking amazing experience,” she added, “I have never seen mountains so pretty as these.”

So here are a few photos from the day – right after this short video. I took a bunch on my Nikon too, but those can wait for our return in a couple of weeks.

And, by the way, we will be worshipping this morning at the Presbyterian Church here in Beckley, West Virginia. Wherever you are, please set aside an hour for church and join us is spirit.

Peace, always – DEREK

  1. Consider going to Marlinton on 219 and north to Scenic Hwy , art 150, and back south to cranberry Glades area. On the way south, get off on Williams River Road and head west along the river. Always scenic, and quiet. Enjoy.

  2. Derek – My parents were married in Beckley Presbyterian Church! From junior high school on, my mother & her family lived down the street and were BPC members. I believe my grandmother was the first woman session member there. I haven’t been inside since my grandmother’s funeral in 2013 – I hope the church is doing well and that you and Rebekah enjoyed worshiping there – John J.
