So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. – Galatians 6:9
Okay, so that was ridiculous fun.
I’m talking about playing golf Monday in the rain – the heavy rain – the persistent precipitation that had us all completely soaked from head to toe!
Several factors combined to make this work. First, I have not played since late October, so I was motivated to see this through if at all possible. Then, it was a tournament fundraiser for mission projects at Wake Forest Presbyterian Church; WFPC is the congregation Rebekah served from 2013-2021 and we love love love these good people. Third, my friend George asked me to play, so it was a great opportunity to catch up with him. Finally, playing a round of golf is absolutely one of my favorite things to do.
So we played, over at the Henderson Country Club, and for the first nine holes the rain was relentless. Relentless in the sense that even the insides of my pockets had standing water in them. Relentless in that my golf glove fell apart after a handful of holes. Relentless for club handles slipping during my swing. Relentless dripping rainwater on the insides of my glasses because my hat was soaked through. Relentless in that my hearing aids almost shorted out.
Yet, somehow, the ball kept flying a really long way and in the right direction. I am not sure quite how to explain it other than that I was in my happy place and my swing evidently reflected that.
Regardless, it is always good to have fun, to hang around great people and to contribute to a good cause. Then sometimes, and this is quite the bonus, I also get to hit a passably good shot.
But this is life. Sometimes it rains; sometimes the sun shines; sometimes things work out beautifully; sometimes they don’t. But always, regardless, we have the opportunity to be grateful and to live like we mean it.
Peace and blessings, in every way – DEREK
