Why My Heart is Singing Today #WakeForest

Rebekah and I watching WFPC Sunday June 15

As a result of all this, my loved brothers and sisters, you must stand firm, unshakable, excelling in the work of the Lord as always, because you know that your labor isn’t going to be for nothing in the Lord. – 1 Corinthians 15:58

My heart is singing – Rebekah’s too – at the news from Wake Forest Presbyterian Church that they have found their new pastor. This is something we have looked forward to hearing for a long time and we couldn’t be happier.

We watched Sunday’s congregational meeting to witness the Nominating team’s choice presented for a vote (it was unanimous) and we could feel the sense of joy and of promise from the team, in the congregation and from the new pastor – Rev Liz Troyer.

The symmetry in this is profound, as it was 12 years ago to the day (June 16, 2013) that Rebekah was called to lead WFPC – and then the new pastor’s first Sunday (the first in August) will be exactly four years from Rebekah’s last message (the first Sunday in August 2021).

Rebekah and I deeply love the people and the mission of WFPC and we love the community too. We still feel the same way about Trinity Presbyterian in Pensacola and First Presbyterian of Brandon all these years later.

Huge Opportunity!

The opportunity for Liz Troyer and her family to make a meaningful impact in Wake Forest is huge – the possibilities are off the charts. A town exploding with growth, people’s need to find faith-based community deeper than ever, and a strong multi-generational congregation resourced by a gifted staff.

We can’t wait to see what happens over the next few years as Liz and her family get settled in.

It’s like this comment I heard from a friend who has started to visit Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church here in Tarboro. His background is traditional Baptist and hers Pentecostal. “We were talking about the message from last Sunday,” he said, “so we got out the Bible and read the scripture together. My wife looked at me and she said, ‘You know what? The Presbyterians have got it going on…'”

Amen to that, my friend. Both here and in Wake Forest. The Presbyterians have got it going on.

God bless your ministry, Rev. Liz Troyer; God bless your family; and God bless Wake Forest too – DEREK
