By the light of the (super) moon

Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church

The unfolding of your words gives light; it helps ordinary people to become wise. – Psalm 119:130

Wednesday evening an amazing moon lit up the night sky over Tarboro, and our neighborhood was so bright that I went out to grab a few photographs.

Those four, plus a handful of other “night shots” from this past weekend, remind me of how much fun it is to capture images in existing light even when it is dark.

I can confidently say you will never ever see any flash photography from me. Flash tends to flatten out images by filling in too many of the nuanced shades and undulations that give a subject definition.

This is one of the reasons I prefer to take portrait photographs in the shade rather than full sun. Because light not only reveals things, if we have too much it can go so far as to wash the details away.

There is a lot more we could talk about around that idea, but I don’t want to distract from this fun set of images.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light. – Ephesians 5:8

Enjoy – DEREK

  1. Nice photos (as always!) but I do have to disagree about lighting – flash or off camera flash can really enhance details 🙂

    • My guess is its because I have never explored the possible nuances… one more reason I need to learn more about my camera! One of these days….
