smile like a baby!

Pure love, given and returned.

I love this photograph of Rebekah and our grandson, David – because it tells a story. It tells the story of a great love that wasn’t earned, wasn’t won, couldn’t be contrived in any way. It simply is.

The scene is not posed; in fact they’re not even aware of the camera. I didn’t  say “hold that look,” or comb a stray lock, or move Andrew out of the way, or arrange the light just so. Instead I turned around, saw David Henry loving on his grandmama (and vice-versa), and quickly captured the image.

SUNDAY: Today it’s Sunday morning, and I have this picture in my head of God delighting in me in much the same way. Nothing I did to earn it; nothing I could do; it simply is.

And I’m wondering if I can look back into God’s face the same way that David is looking into Rebekah’s? I’m wondering if I know how to simply enjoy the fact of such unconditional love? I’m wondering if I can ever throw aside my caution enough to enjoy God like David enjoys his grandmama?

David and Rebekah

WORSHIP: Today is set aside for worship. I’d like to think that, when I get to church and sing a song or two of praise, that I can let the love wash over me without caution and without shame. I’d like to think that I will be able to offer my God just half the smile David Henry gives to his grandmama…

  1. There’s no smile like a baby’s and no smile like the one a baby’s can evoke!
