Why it’s not about me when I’m on the road (it couldn’t be!)

I’m on the road again. This time headed to Sarasota, via Atlanta and then Tampa.

Travelling is always a conflict of emotions. I’m excited about the opportunity to share my message – yet I want to be home with Rebekah; I’m looking forward to spending time at a church full with people who were motivated to invite me to speak – yet I miss my new family at WFPC; I’m lifted up by the energy these events inject into my spirit – yet I am often drained by the experience.

REALITY CHECK: Most of all, however, I remain humbled and amazed at the fact that anyone would fly me anywhere to hear me talk. A couple of years back my friend Gerard drove me to Tampa International Airport for a flight to San Diego. “So tell me again what are you doing in California this weekend?” he asked.

“I’m the keynote speaker at a men’s conference for a large Methodist church,” I said.

“And they’re paying for your ticket?” he queried. “All the way from Florida?”

“Not only that, but they’re going to give me an honorarium too,” I said. “Go figure.”

“I don’t get it,” he said, shaking his head.

Yet there we were, headed to the airport. And here I am, at RDU heading for Sarasota via Atlanta and Tampa.

CREATIVE GOD: I had a similar conversation with my hairdresser yesterday. Only she seemed more inclined to believe that the people buying the airplane tickets know what they’re doing!

God is certainly creative. God is certainly full of opportunities for me to serve – not despite my limitations but because of my limitations. So, Lord, use me this weekend and speak your word through me. Empower me to share words of life and light and truth, so that your work is my work too. Amen.
