The other day a friend told me she didn’t know how I managed to come up with something to write about every day. I responded that sometimes there really is nothing there… but I begin anyway, because if I “have nothing” then that is something to write about!
Well that’s where I am this morning. Not empty so much as with nothing to say about it. At the same time, this is my personal devotional exercise, my discipline, and so I will turn to the scriptures.
Today’s “verse of the day” at BibleGateway.com is from Psalm 94. Read this out loud, and listen closely to God’s word for you:
I cried out, “I am slipping!”
Psalm 94:18-19
but your unfailing love, O Lord, supported me.
When doubts filled my mind,
your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.
I really do, sometimes, feel like I am slipping. This whole saga of my parents, going back several years, has not so much been a crisis of faith so much as a crisis of confidence. The whole “sure footing” thing.
Like that time, soon after we moved from Florida, when I got on our roof to clean off the debris and clear out the gutters. The Florida house was a low ranch, with a pitch of probably 25-degrees; I could walk around with my eyes closed. But our house in Wake Forest is a tall two story, then a drop off at the back; and the roof pitch is closer to 40-degrees! I stepped on a piece of pine straw and my foot slipped maybe and eighth of an inch… confidence gone!
I still believed in the roof, and its stability. But I couldn’t go up there any more!
Today – and I am thankful for the guidance of the Psalms – I feel “the comfort of God”. Today, “God’s unfailing love” is supporting me. Today I know I am not going to slip.
Grateful – DEREK
