The disciples came up and asked Jesus, “Why do you tell stories?”

He replied, “You’ve been given insight into God’s kingdom. You know how it works. Not everybody has this gift, this insight; it hasn’t been given to them. Whenever someone has a ready heart for this, the insights and understandings flow freely. But if there is no readiness, any trace of receptivity soon disappears. That’s why I tell stories: to create readiness, to nudge the people toward a welcome awakening…” – Matthew 13

The power of Christ’s storytelling is that his parables got to the heart of what was important and also got to the hearts of the people listening.

This is exactly why I share stories as often as I do. I want to first of all offer something interesting and, then, use that opportunity to communicate something of value, something transformational.

I believe the following story, another from my memoir, has a shot at doing both.

The Dam Broke:

Here’s the set-up: It’s 1996 and we have just moved to Brandon, Florida. Rebekah is settling in to her new job as pastor/head of staff at First Presbyterian Church and, while the response from the congregation has been very positive to date, there is some residual hesitancy, a little guarded fear from people who have too recently experienced hurt and disappointment.

This story is when, and how, the dam broke. The main character, Ralph Pennywitt, is a wonderful human being and a real pillar of the church community.

Take a listen, and think about how wonderful it is to enjoy a little life in church. Because the Jesus I know and love didn’t just tell a good story, I’m certain that he appreciates one too.
