Anchored in Hope and Lifted by Love

The Tar River Saturday morning

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. – Hebrews 6:19

Here are a few photographs from this past weekend that help to tell the story. From the beauty of the late afternoon sky (Howard Memorial at Saint James), to the renovation at Saint Patrick Street, to the morning light over the Tar.

This week’s rains have been gradually filling the river as the hinterlands to the north and the west drain into the ditches and the streams and the tributaries, eventually overwhelming the watercourse as it runs through Edgecombe County and Tarboro.

– this morning the Tar is overflowing

This morning, Monday, I am sure the river will be spilling its banks.

My favorite image, though, is that of Max sprawled out in the entryway at the new house as Rebekah takes notes from more of the countless measurements we have taken. For me, Max represents the promise of domestic normalcy. “Look, there’s a dog sacked out on the floor; somebody must live here.” I can only hope.

But is not hope one of the strongest gifts we have that serve to anchor us? And, in faith, hope is not wishful thinking but it is something grounded in trust, in experience, in our relationship with God.

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure…”

In a moment here in our nation where it seems sometimes like the very ground we stand on is unstable, it is good to have a firm anchor for the soul.

“Love lifted me,” the hymn-writer declares, “Love lifted me! When nothing else could help, Love lifted me!”

We are anchored in hope and lifted by love. What a great combination to start off this new week – DEREK
