Stumbling onto an absolute gem: Edenton, where the Chowan River meets the Albemarle Sound

– Edenton, the Cupola House

Saturday morning, after the “Run For Your Life” 5K, Rebekah and I looked out at the picture perfect day and decided to drive over to Edenton for lunch.

This was our first visit and Edenton could not have given a better first impression.

On the way over, we did some research and realized we were showing up on the 251st anniversary of the “Edenton Tea Party.” The 1774 document defying King George (Penelope Barker and 50 other signatories), protest and consequent economic boycott, together comprise one of the earliest known women’s political actions in our history. What a great story!

As we drove in we were immediately impressed with how well preserved, maintained and litter-free Edenton is. It reminds me of what is possible both when the balance of local re-investment tips in favor of restoration and when local authorities begin to take responsibility for cleanup and beautification.

So we parked outside the Cupola House on Broad Street downtown and wandered the few blocks between the lighthouse and the historic Chowan County courthouse. Coffee shops and restaurants, architectural salvage studios, artsy boutiques, museums and more.

Old World charm along with current day civic pride. Rebekah and I are already talking about planning a relaxed weekend in a B&B, where I will bring my Nikon camera along, we will visit the museums and take a deeper dive into the area.

Our first look, however, is very much an A+ for Edenton – DEREK
