And then came the sunrise (photographs that will take your breath away)

Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.

– on the dunes later the same day

Posting yesterday’s series of afternoon beach photographs reminded me that I woke up early the next day and took my camera back to Camber Sands. There I watched the early morning light begin to pour in from the east. The result was the following set of photographs, some of the most satisfying images I have ever captured.

Standing up on top of the dunes, looking around and planning my shoot, I felt overwhelmed with love and saturated with gratitude for the amazing gift that is this world.

I recorded this short devotional thought. “It’s all about paying attention,” I say. Not a slick production, but these words definitely come from the heart.

Take a listen, and then scroll through the captivating photographs below.

– always learning to pay attention to what is around me

  1. Great post, Derek. Paying attention…. Thank you for sharing your photos, your reflections, your insights. Your family travelogue suggests y’all had a rich reunion.
Your photo compositions have been delightful and I am glad to see that you still enjoy shooting with your DSLR. I am considering a new camera and would love an offline email chat with you.
Blessings to you, my friend. Hugh

  2. Paying attention so captures where I am right now and has been a part of my “quiet time” for a long time. Like the other morning I was doing an indepth study of Apostle Paul and had begun
His second missionary journey…part of which is through Thessalonica. I was really trying to take my anxious mind off of a Mohs surgery on my leg in just a couple of hours. You are completely awake for it as they take off layers of skin and putting it under a microscope each time to see if they get all of the cancer cells. Surprisingly, they let me get it and go to a waiting room while doing the lab work…about 45 minutes. There was another woman waiting and we both agreed to turn off the blaring tv because neither one of us was watching. And we began to talk…about the place each one of us was having the Mohs…then ehrre we lived, family, etc. I asked where she was originally from because of her accent. She said Greece. And I asked where in Greece….like I would really know! She said a place in the northern part called Thessalonica. Suddenly, I had a sense of God’s hand upon me…us both in that antiseptic anxious waiting room. I told her that I did know where Thessalonica was because of Apostle Paul. She got so excited telling me that the home she grew up in…was like 500 yards from where Apostle Paul supposedly preached there. It was all in the details of two strangers “in the same boat” who were strangers no more in Christ.

    • Thanks, Laurey. That’s a great story. I appreciate you sharing. I really need to get back to Greece!
BTW, 1 Thessalonians is one of my favorite books. I especially like Paul’s call for us to “stay awake”
