Weekend Roundup (house sold, and hope on many fronts)

Maul-Hall

In a week where all the attention has been on the house next door, I thought I would start the week’s “roundup” with a shout out to our home, Maul-Hall, which has a new look now that the remainder of the shutters have come down.

So a big “thanks” to our neighbors for climbing the ladder and finding a big enough hammer to persuade the last three shutters to stop clinging on to the wall. Not only do I really like the clean look, I have never understood non-functional features on a house, like shutters that don’t actually close.

The next photograph is a copy of the sales/information flyer for next door, cleverly designed and produced by our realtor John’s creative wife, Gayle.

All the publicity has been wonderful, and there has been a lot of interest and activity from the get-go; but it turns out it was the very first showing that sold the house and it hadn’t even been on the market for one day!

Hope of Fall:

Then, and for the second consecutive morning, it has been light jacket weather for my walk with Max! Today it was 57-degrees and just that slight dip into the 50’s has given me real hope for the beginning of the end of this long hot summer.

Not just hope for the fall but hope for my mum, too. Over at rehab she enjoyed getting out of the building with me and into the sunshine. I am very much hopeful that early next week will see a transition back into her home in Heritage, where she can be more settled and comfortable and reengaged with life.

More good eats:

This summary rounds out with our return visit to the Cape Fear Seafood Company.

The evening out didn’t replace our missed wedding anniversary date, but it sure was nice to slip away from all the challenges of the week and enjoy the delicious treat of somebody else cooking, somebody else cleaning the dishes, and amazingly wonderful food to savor.

What a beautiful Saturday morning this is. Enjoy this weekend, friends, and – above all – be people who are grateful and kind and encouraging and full with grace – DEREK

  1. I see iris growing on the property near the For Sale sign. I’m infected with the “iris virus” and have quite a collection. God’s world is so amazing!

  2. Hello Derek. You won’t know me but my wife (Nee Heather Southgate) and I knew both your parents and their parents. We lived in Rayleigh for about 80 years, moving to Leigh on Sea 10 years ago. We were part of the church your mum was linked with, Eastwood Rd Evangelical Church Rayleigh, and were so pleased to discover your website with so much info. and numerous photographs. My recollection of your mum and dad is very much as they appear in their wedding photo.
Derek, do you have an email address as I would love to send a message to mum. Presumably she doesn’t have her own one. I think she will remember me: we were part of a small group who used to play tennis at the local playing field tennis courts. Also, she and her older sister Mary used to come to my birthday party in early January
    Every blessing , Tony Grigg.

    • I am with her right now. She says, “wonderful to hear from you!” She remembers your names very fondly (“lovely young people”!!).
How cool that you found us. You can email a letter to her at derekmaul@gmail.com – please include photos.
Peace and blessings to you both – Derek
